Hi everyone! I just graduated from Union College with a degree in mathematics and am going to graduate school at Columbia University to study actuarial science. I just recently took the GREs (like the SATS but for grad school) and thus am very prepared to tutor for the SATs both verbal and quantitative as well as in chemistry (my minor) and most mathematics classes.

I am very familiar with their needs, characteristics, and learning styles. I have passed three PRAXIS II tests: Elementary Content knowledge, High School English, and High School Math.

...Throughout working with day care centers, schools and doing workshops: I have learned and taught phonics. Recently, I have taught a Kindergarten class and have used phonics every day to help the children learn the sounds of vowels and consonants. We also did a lot of rhyming which also helps with reading.

...Nothing teaches chemistry better than demonstrations, either real or virtual. Once you understand and visualize what is going on you own it forever. This is extremely important for students looking to go into the physical sciences (biology, premed, chemistry and even physics) as the fundamentals of chemistry you learn will be applied to other disciplines.

...My approach to tutoring is to make the topic personal. Rote memorization will only go so far. In subjects such as History and English Literature the key to comprehension and internalization is understanding the motivations and forces, the "stories" going on behind the scenes.
