Sal V. ...I believe that reasoning out a formula is far better than memorizing it. In a good tutoring session, the student will do 50% or more of the talking, discovering the solution rather than being told how to get there. I understand that math is about clear communication and that a 'right answer' has no value if it's not well communicated.

Brook A. G. ...That is just my opinion. Exposure to other cultures, countries, languages, travel, work and not only academic experience, all go or should go to developing an interesting tutor. Having said that, in the end what counts is whether the student is interested in learning and whether or not he or she likes the tutor, regardless of his or her experience or training.
