Mark G. ...Having taught English and ESL during my 20-year high school teaching career, I am well-qualified to tutor in vocabulary. I feel strongly that vocabulary must be learned in context, so a reliance on flash cards is not a major part of how I teach vocabulary. I also feel strongly that dictionaries, while useful, should not be the primary source of knowledge about the definitions of words.

Relating those concepts to real life scenarios helps make the content relevant, interesting, and answers the question "Why do I have to know this?" Teaching history is similar. Relate the material to current events and real life situations and students will understand.
