...When I got lost, I had to take a break and go back through the basics. It was terribly tedious at first, but I developed a skill for breaking down a new concept and coming at it from several different directions. The other problem with teaching yourself from a book is that you rarely find the bulk material interesting. (read more)
Looking back at an distinguished career in academia and industry, what I have enjoyed most was teaching and mentoring students and see them succeed in life.
