...In regards to the coursework, I focus on students understanding the underlying concepts behind the material. In my experience, explaining WHY this problem works this way, not just HOW to solve it, increases the likelihood of students understanding/retaining the information presented to them. ...I have seen some of my classmates switched STEM majors for many years because of this reason. I also concluded that it was very fundamental math skills that they were lacking and unfortunately with a very fast paced semester they could not keep up.
