My favorite method of doing so is constantly facing students with variations of the original problem, waiting for their ideas, and challenging them. I always try to explain the same principle from different perspectives, often using cross-disciplinary analogies. (read more)
...I've found that there is more of a "picture" of mathematics that develops from recognizing patterns rather than following "mechanical algorithms". Sure, ultimately you teach an algorithm at first for familiarization, but it really becomes effortless in application as a picture/shape. My minor was in math in physics as an undergrad at Arizona.
