We provide a brief commentary on recent work by Hammer and Son on the scaling behavior of nuclear reactions involving the emission of several loosely bound neutrons. In this work they discover a regime, termed unnuclear physics, in which these reactions are governed by an approximate conformal symmetry of the nuclear force. Remarkably, the scaling exponents that govern nuclear reactions can be related to the energies of ultracold atomic drops confined in harmonic potentials. We also comment on… Expand

Unnuclear physics: Conformal symmetry in nuclear reactions

- Physics, Medicine
- Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
- 2021

It is argued that unlike the relativistic unparticle, the unnucleus is realized, to a good approximation, in nuclear reactions involving emission of a few neutrons, when the energy of the final-state neutrons in their center-of-mass frame lies in the range between about 0.1 MeV and 5 MeV. Expand

It is found that in the appropriate low-energy limit, unparticle stuff with scale dimension dU looks like a nonintegral number dU of invisible particles, so dramatic evidence for a nontrivial scale invariant sector could show up experimentally in missing energy distributions. Expand
