...During my 40+ years career as a Laser Optics scientist/engineer, Information Technology Specialist and programmer I used to apply mathematics on a daily basis. I was born in St.Petersburg (former Leningrad) where I got MS in Optical Engineering and PhD in Applied Mathematics and Physics. Since 1993 I have been living in the USA, where I continue my professional activity. (read more)
...Discrete math is a broad term for the study of mathematical objects that are discrete (i.e. separate or countable) by nature. Examples include integers, graphs, sets, and sequences. I took a series of classes at Caltech in discrete math, which were some of the best classes I had there because they covered such a range of topics, including logic, combinatorics, and number theory. ...Tutored several students in physics, pre-calculus, calculus, SAT and GRE. I hold two engineering degrees. My Bachelors was in mechanical engineering, focusing on classical physics. (read more)
...While teaching Algebra 1 I have written curriculum guidelines for other teachers, constructed exams and selected text books to use at the school district where I work. I have also privately tutored nearly 100 students in Algebra. In all cases, I have improved student grades dramatically. (read more)
...As part of the CIS minor, I took 2 discrete math classes. The first class focused on propositional logic/calculus, number theory, and basic probability/statistics. The second class focused on algorithm runtime (big O and big theta notation), graph theory, induction (mathematical induction and strong induction), and a introduction to linear algebra. (read more)
