...My favorite method of doing so is constantly facing students with variations of the original problem, waiting for their ideas, and challenging them. I always try to explain the same principle from different perspectives, often using cross-disciplinary analogies. ...Too often, students get very good at memorizing certain procedures without having an understanding of what they are actually doing. I ask a lot of questions to assess the student's thought process and then tailor my instruction based on the student's response.
