In math, everything you learn builds on top of what you learned in previous years, and without that strong foundation, students can fall behind. When teachers explain something in class they assume that the students have a certain knowledge about math based on what they learned in previous years.

The short of it is I redirected him each time, every day for several weeks and instead had him close open cabinet doors and drawers in place of touching the wall. And with similar redirection, I got him off his need to tap the last (top) stair.
