...The students were much more engaged when applying "the math" this way than through any "story problem" or decontextualized number expression. My ELA teaching experience has primarily been life skills and items with high interest. The NYC newspapers (I taught in The Bronx) have a "weird stories" column and so I would use these stories about unusual happenings in NYC to teach the 5Ws+H. (read more)
