...I use diagnostic probes to explore students' mathematical thinking and help to shore up their knowledge gaps. Mathematics particularly is a subject where knowledge gaps in elementary arithmetic and algebra can cause cascading problems. A student who can easily factor a quadratic equation with multiple techniques may misunderstand "simpler" ideas, such as the meaning of negative exponents. (read more)
