While the benefits are many---including improved speed and the reduction in errors---the main point is to teach the students how to *look* for (and, therefore, to *see*) short, most efficient solutions. ...I think math is a really rich and interesting subject, and although it has a reputation for being confusing and complicated, I believe it doesn't have to be that way! I enjoy teaching students by explaining concepts in intuitive and interesting ways that simplify rather than complicate.
