The answer it gives is:



I'm struggling to understand the formula or operation(s) one would go through to answer this.

Try rewriting 25b+1 so the base is 5. If you can it so it's all in terms of 5b, then you can plug "y" in, and see what you get.

How did you get that? Try showing all the steps:

25b+1 = (52)b+1 = 52(b+1) = ...

25^(b+1) = x
and 5^b = y
or, 5^(b+1) = 5y
or, 5^2(b+1) = 5y^2
or, 25^(b+1) = 25y^2
or, x = 25y^2
