Factoring a polynomial if possible homework help

Postby duddy on Mon Jul 08, 2013 9:16 pm

The instructions are "write in a completely factored form relative to the integers."
the problem is: (y -b)^2 - y + b
Can't seem to factor it and I'm not sure what they want, can anyone help? Thanks!

Briefly by visual inspection, factorizing maybe or maybe not.

First try doing the squaring part and think how factorizations are possible from that....

Actually, there is something:
(y-b)^2-y+b
(y-b)^2-(y-b)
(y-b)((y-b)-1)
(y-b)(y-b-1)_________which is likely the expected factored answer.
