### Square roots, Powers, and Order of Operations

Hello there. I am new to this site was referred by a friend.

I am having trouble with the last 3 math problems and have to show my work.

(-1/5) and the 2 is litlle up by the parathensis

the square root of 10+15

I will guess that the exercises are as follows:

$\mbox{1. }\,\left(-\frac{1}{5}\right)^2$

$\mbox{2. }\, \sqrt{10\, +\, 15}$

$\mbox{3. }\, (-8)(-5)\, +\, (7)^2$

...and that the instructions were something like "simplify".

The "little 2 up in the corner" is called an "exponent". To learn what these are and how they work, please try this lesson. Also please look at the lessons on the order of operations and square roots.

Once you have learned the basic terms and techniques, please attempt the exercises. If you get stuck, you can then reply with a clear listing of your efforts so far, even if you think they are wrong. For instance, you would start, in exercise (2), by showing what you got when you added 10 and 15. Thank you!
