Postby foood » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:45 am

jamie had x dollars in the bank. he took out 1/2 of it. then he took out 1/3 of the remaining sum to get something else. what fraction of the original amount remained in his account?

a)1/6
b)1/5
c)1/4
d)1/3

ummm so i did 1-(1/2-1/3) which i got 1/6...a)
my answer sheet says d)

(this is from a isee test prep book by the princeton review.....)

i did 1-(1/2-1/3)

Does the exercise say that "then he took one-third of the original sum", or that "then he took one-third of the remaining sum"? Your expression reflects the former.

so get the "remaining sum" and do 1/3 to that
you can see how to do "1/3 of" here
