Help with silly problem

Postby tammielee1 » Mon May 02, 2011 10:53 pm

What is the answer to the following problem and why? 6/2(1+2) It seems like there are conflicting ways listed on the web site.
Do you do 6/2 first or 2x3 first? I appreciated the help.

The notation is ambiguous. Good arguments can be made for either position.

For a discussion of how (and thus why there is no one "right" answer to your question), please scroll down to the last example on this page.
