peanuts-word problem

a 46 5/16 bag of nuts is packaged in 1 3/4 containers. The remaining nuts are given to the person packaging the nuts. How much does the person get??
first i multiplied 46 5/16 by 4/7 to get 2964/112 then divided that out to get 26 46/112 which then becomes 26 bags with 46/112 packages of nuts.. or you can reduce the fraction again to get 23/56?? is this the amount left over that the packager gets?? Or am I way off track??? not really sure how to answer the original question.

I'm not sure why you're multiplying, or where 4/7 came from...?

You have been asked how much is left over after you've divided the original amount into the listed size piles. So you are being asked for the remainder after division.

the way I am trying to work this is that you change the 46 5/16 lb gab into a proper fraction of 230/16 and then are you saying I need to divide that by 7/4 ( or an un simplified version of 1 3/4 lb)
I thought that you could multiply by the reciprical to make it easier than dividing two fractions??!!
Please assist me further. I am lost obviously

You hadn't given your reasoning, so I was confused.

If you're multiplying by the reciprocal, this will give the same result as dividing by the improper fraction. Convert the result back to a mixed number. The whole-number part is the number of same-size piles (bags, whatever); the fractional part is the remainder.

You haven't provided units, so it's hard to say precisely what that remainder will represent, but it relates to how much the person gets.

okay let me try this question all over again... a( 46 and 5/16 lb) bag of nuts is packaged in ( 1 and 3/4 lb ) containers. The remainder is to be given to the person packaging the nuts. How much does the person get? justify your answer.
I have been working on this problem and here is what i have come up with...
46 and 5/16 = 741/16
1 and 3/4 = 7/4
so I multiply the first fraction by reciprocal of second fraction
741/16 * 4/7 = 2964/112
this divided out gives me 26.46 so I still am not sure how to state the answer. How many nuts will the packager get???
Should I say 46 or do I need it to be in fraction 26 and 46/100 form or what
going nuts on this problem!!!
