Is it possible to have a function without a relation? I think the answer is no but I'd like some confirmation or correction! thanks

Your instinct is correct!

For a complete explanation, try this lesson on functions. But the short answer is that any pairing of information is a relation, but only certain "well behaved" relations are actually functions. Functions are a sub-category of relations.

All functions are relations, but many relations are not functions! :D
