Word Problem: An open box is contructed from a 10 inch squar

Postby imanangel0356 » Thu Sep 10, 2009 1:33 am

An open box is contructed from a 10 inch square piece of cardboard by cutting squares of length x out of each corner and folding up the sides. Express the volume of the box as a function of x and state the domain.

Can someone please explain to me how to do this?

For an illustrated and color-coded explanation of how to set this up, try here.

By the way, "ten inch square" does not mean "ten square inches", but "ten inches on each side".
