Good morning, I am having trouble grasping the concept of how to setup linear equations. I could really use some help with the following problem:
At a football game, dad purchases hot dogs for $1.25 and drinks for $1.75. If he purchases 9 items for $13.25, how many of each did he purchase?
This is a mixture of two things that you have to work out together. Use the way they show
here for "mixture" word problems:
total items: 9
drinks: d
hot dogs: 9 - d
unit costs:
drinks: 1.75
hot dogs: 1.25
total costs:
drinks: 1.75*d
hot dogs: [fill this in]
Then add to get the expression for the total costs, set equal to the value they give you, and solve.
If you get stuck, write back showing your steps starting from [fill this in]. Thanks.
