need help understanding process of solving 4x + 9 = -3

I am having trouble with this equasion, 4x+9=-3. Can someone please help me to understand the process in getting this started.

4x+9=-3

4x = -3 - 9

4x = -12

then you divide the both sides by the number " 4 " because you want the " x " to be alone .

so it is going to be like this when you divide the both sides by " 4 "

x = -3

do you understand that you need to use inverse operations?? inverse operations are operations that undo the other.(e.g. - 2 + 2 = 0). Now you need to isolate x.
