### Algebra Problem Solving: need to know how to translate

I am trying to understand how to the equations for problem solving. I need to know how to translate problem into equations. I have read a have figure out problems that are already solve but, I can't seem to write them as equations.

Example: translate the statement " two fewer than ten times a number is 78". I write the problem as

10(x -2) = 78
10(x-2) = x + 78
10x - 20 = 78x
10 - x - 20 = 78 - x
10 - 20 = 78
10 = 78

This is my answer I don't know if this is correct or even if the process is right, I need help understanding the problem - solving.

To study the techniques for this, try an online lesson on translating word problems.

How did "78" become "x + 78"?
To learn how to solve linear equations, try here.

I'm guessing that "x" stands for "a number"...? So your set-up as something similar to the following...?

. . . . .a number: x
. . . . .ten times a number: 10x
. . . . .two fewer than: (10x) - 2
. . . . ."is": (10x) - 2 = 78

To start the problem, you wanna right it in proper algebraic form, which you did.

But, you did the problem wrong

So,

10x-2=78
You get this equation because it's 10 times A NUMBER. (which means only one number, which is in this case, x.)

10x-2=78
10x=80
x=8
