### Little Jack Horner's pie contains 17 raspberries, 3 peach...

Little Jack Horner's pie contains 17 raspberries, 3 peach slices, 28 apple slices, 4 pear slices, 89 raisins, 67 cherries, 2 plums. How many times will he have to stick his thumb into the pie before he is sure to pull out two pieces of the same fruit?

I don't know where to begin to solve this. Please explain...how do you simplify it?

I don't just need the answer...I need the explanation of how you get to it. They gave this problem to my 5th grader.

how many diff. kinds of fruit r in the pie?
so wat is smallest num of picks U need if U want 1 of each ?
if U do one more than that will U still only have 1 of each?

Well now you have got me thinking: Are they asking if you need to pull out two of the same piece on the same pick? Or just keep picking until you have 2 of the same piece outside of the pie. ???

no U pick 1 out each time & put it down (not back in the pie)
