(x^3 + 3x + 1)^2

Try doing the expansion vertically:

vertical multiplication:
                    x^3 + 3x + 1
                    x^3 + 3x + 1
--------------------------------
             x^3        + 3x + 1
      3x^4       + 9x^2 + 3x
x^6 + 3x^4 + x^3
--------------------------------

Then add down to obtain the product.
