I will guess that the above means "Solve P = A / (1 + rt) for r", as the subject line says. To clarify with LaTeX:

. . . . . $\mbox{Solve }\, P\, =\, \frac{A}{1\, +\, rt}\, \mbox{ for }\, r$

If so, then the first step in solving this literal equation should probably be multiplying through by the denominator to get:

. . . . . $P(1\, +\, rt)\, =\, A$

. . . . . $P\, +\, Prt\, =\, A$

Subtract the "P" to the right-hand side, and then divide both sides by "Pt" to isolate "r".
