Skiers and Snowboarder suffer about 288,400 injuries each winter, with skiing accounting for about 400 more injuries than snowboarding. How many injuries occur in each winter sport?

They give you ski accidents in terms of boarding accidents, so pick a letter for boarding accidents. Then make an expression with this letter that stands for ski accidents. Then use the total-injuries number to make an equation with the letter and the expression.
