A 8m board is cut into two pieces. One piece is 2m longer than the other. How long are the pieces?

how would you solve?

"One piece" is defined in terms of "the other", so pick a variable for the length of "the other". Then create an expression, in terms of this variable, for the length of the "one piece".

Add the variable and the expression, and set equal to the given total length. Solve the linear equation for the value of the variable. Back-solve for the two lengths.

If you get stuck, please reply showing how far you have gotten in working through the steps. Thank you!
