Don't understand this equation

There is an equation in my book: Solve for y in the equation " 
". Um... how would I solve that?

(As you'll see when you study the lesson, solving literal equations is very much like solving linear equations.)
The only real difference between solving the linear equation "3 + y + 1 = 0" and the literal equation "3x + y + 1 = 0" is that you can't simplify as much, because of the second variable.
