There are 12 balls, eleven of equal weight and one that is heavier or lighter than the others. You are given a balance scale. How would you find the off-weight ball in just three weighings?

The Math Forum has a great archive of exactly this sort of exercise. Their solution involves coins, but the process is exactly the same for balls or any other objects.
