Is this an absolute value problem? If so the last line of the absolute value symbol was left out of your original problem. I'm going to assume this is supposed to be
|2+3(-4)|
First, just solve the inside part of the absolute value, i.e.,
2+3(-4)
Do you know how to solve this?
Then remember the definition of absolute value:
|x| = x when x > 0
|x| = -x when x < 0
So after you solve the first part, treat the result as "x" and apply the above rules.
