6÷2(1+2)

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, this just seemed the best place to start. I'm sure some of you have seen the problem 6÷2(1+2) on facebook, and most the people get either 1 or 9. Who is right and who is wrong? I believe it is 9, but after doing it a few other ways, i got 1 and just wanted to make sure im not OVER thinking it.

The last example on this page explains why there is (for the moment anyway) not a "right" answer to this. :lol:

No the answer is definitely 9, the example you posted is incorrect.

It's simply incorrect. If it were correct, then 2X² would really mean (2 × X)²=2² × X²=4 × X², but it doesn't; it means 2 × X².

That example indicates to do multiplications before divisions. That being the rule, the steps will be
6 div.by 2(1+2)
6 div.by 2(3)
6 div.by 6
6/6=1
1

You can state clear control of how you want to express numbers combined in operations through grouping symbols, or parentheses.

Hi,

At first u have to apply the PEMDAS rule ,and according to that the Parentheses comes first

Step:1- 1+2=3

so the expression is now 6/2*3

As the precedence of the division and multiplication are same so we will do the operation from left to right so first we ll do division

step:-2- 6/2=3

so the remaining expression is 3*3

step:-3 3*3 = 9
