defining order relation (lexicographical?)

Postby nunile on Thu Apr 17, 2014 12:18 am

i'm writing my master's thesis on lexicography & i'm in desperate need of your much appreciated expertise with trying to define the following order relation, no equation, but rather an overall impression would do regarding reflexivity / symmetry .. as against a strict alphabetical order.
it's about the way in some dictionaries words are ordered by roots instead of alphabetically (ie. word families)

thanks a lot in advance !!

a A a A
a A b A
a A c A
..usf..
b A a A
b A b A
b A c A
..usf..
z A z A
a A a B
a A b B
a A c B
..usf..
z A z Z
a B a A
a B b A
a B c A
..usf..
z Z x Z
z Z y Z
z Z z Z
-end-

so i guess it might be, in my unknowing opinion, somewhat near a lexicographical order.. yet different in a subtle way ??

I don't think anybody can come up with math for your order until you can say exactly what that order is. "somewhat near" & "unknowing" maybe "different in a subtle way" isn't precise enough for eqns etc. Also, what do you mean by "define the following order relation"? Do you want an equation for the words or letters or something, or what? Thnx

thnx for your answer !! i'm sorry i can't express myself as precise as i'd like since this is a field completely strange to me.. tho i want to try my best
probably first of all, is a lexicographical order asymmetric/irreflexive ?
if yep.. all i'd need for the moment might not be an equation, but to know what kind of order (..total, strict total, partial, etc...??) the one posted above could fall under with regards to reflexivity, symmetry, totality.. as compared to an asymmetrical/irreflexive one (ie. lexicographical order, if it's asymmetrical, total or partial....)
