Zstat,c formula-understanding a symbol "l"

Aloha, I'm an older grad student (MPHc) @ SJSU. Our 7-week, distance learning, online Biostatistics course has just begun and I'm feeling really ignorant. However, I am smart (3.95 GPA). I got through trig in HS but never took college algebra or stats. I am missing some info that is hard to find. I was successful at defining and understanding mCn (or nCr), finding the slope of a line and how to use^ on my calculator thanks to a HS math teacher. Now I'm stuck on even naming what I don't understand. It's a symbol in a Zstat,c formula (continuity-correction). In this formula, it looks like a vericle line in front of P-hat - p0, and follows it too. Kind of like this I p-hat - p0 I . I just do't know what it means or what to do with it when calculating the Zstat,c formula by hand. Mahalo for your help. Surfnshred
