practical applications

Postby Motherof8 » Sun Apr 10, 2011 6:19 pm

I am curious about how one would apply the knowledge of the area of a figure in everyday life. I know it is helpful to know the perimeter if one wants to paint a house, but how would you apply knowledge of the area of a polygon?

If one wanted to build a gazebo in one's garden, one might find it useful to be familiar with the properties of an octogon.

It might be noted that geometry was originally "geo-metry", or "earth measuring". The subject could be said to have been invented to serve the practical needs of land ownership.
