If x-3/x=sqrt(3) then 9/(x^4)+(x^4)/9 = ? I got 7  TOPIC_SOLVED

If x-3/x=sqrt(3) then 9/(x^4)+(x^4)/9 = ? I got the answer as 7 with both a calculator and in exact closed form using quadratic formula but my son's teacher says there is a way to rearrange the equations to get the answer w/o actually solving for x. I have my doubts. Can anyone see how to do it w/o ...

Sum of digits of the number (192)^4 times (5)^21?  TOPIC_SOLVED

My son and I are stumped. Without using a calculator what is the sum of the digits of the number (192)^4 times (5)^21?

Difference two squares: pos. integer solns of x^2-y^2=120  TOPIC_SOLVED

Looking for a way to find all positive integers of x^2-y^2=120. Found some by trial and error but don't know how to find them all.

9th degree polynomial inequality  TOPIC_SOLVED

Need to solve the inequality below using only algebra ... -14x^9 + 25x^8 + 414x^7 - 596x^6 - 3434x^5 +2469x^4 + 9414x^3 + 2862x^2 - 1620x <= 0 I can factor out an x to get one root x=0. I graphed it using Quickgraph to get where it crosses the x axis and can see the intervals where it alternates bet...

Isosceles Triangle  TOPIC_SOLVED

Need help with ...

Find all coordinate points A such that triangle ZAP in an isosceles triangle with base ZP where Z is the point (4/7,-9/4) and P is the point (7/2,1/11). No decimal answers which makes the soln(s) incredibly messy. I think there are two solns for A but not sure.

Simplifying a messy expression  TOPIC_SOLVED

Need to combine and simplify the following expression

1/(7-4*SQRT(3)) - 1/(4*SQRT(3)-SQRT(47)) + 1/(SQRT(47) - SQRT(46)) - 1/(SQRT(46)-3*SQRT(5)) +

1/(3*SQRT(5)-2*SQRT(11)) ......... - 1/(SQRT(5) - 2)

Re: Simplifying a messy expression  TOPIC_SOLVED

That's correct. I don't have access to the radical symbols so sorry for the messiness. I got as far as figuring out the pattern. The problem as stated has a negative sign for the last term but I think you are correct that it s/b +. The assigment sheets have ben known to be a bit sloppy when it comes...

Re: Simplifying a messy expression  TOPIC_SOLVED

Yep, That's what I eventually got and like you it seemed to easy but I guess they are not always hard. Thanks for spotting the wrong sign in the problem on the last term. That's how the sign was shown on the handout so I am going to assume it was a typo. I wrote it all out by hand and it should be &...
