But I found the best default strategy to tutoring is to break down the steps needed to solve a math problem, and get the student accustomed to recognizing what needs to be done for each individual problem. In a normal tutoring session I will go over all of the work the child had done in class that week and discuss anything they feel uncertain about. After the child has a firm foundation of understanding the material, I will go over questions they have on any homework throughout the week.
