Bob B. ...The best process here is usually and steady and consistent review of the subject matter combined with many practice problems until a solid level of comfort is reached. Calculus is another big step in the progression of a math student. Sub-topics such as derivatives, differentiation, and maximization can be very intimidating if it feels like the instructor is moving through them too quickly.
