For example, if you do not understand a particular subject matter in Math in 3rd grade, it will be impossible to understand the next steps in that subject matter in 4th or 5th grade.

In terms of pedagogy, I believe that manipulatives work to a point, but it is more important to stress content area fluency than fumbling around with awkward tiles.
