The idea, was to demonstrate that there was a statistically significant reduction of in-vivo plaque volume among the patients taking Cerivastatin for 6 months before their surgery. The drug was surprisingly effective.

If you start with the same thing on both sides of the equals sign, and you do the same thing to both sides, you'll end up with the same thing on both sides of an equals sign. If you do the opposite of an operation you just did, you can cancel and it still works out.
