Margaret M. ...It has its own vocabulary, syntax, and grammar. For example, when we say x=2, everybody *just knows* that we're talking about a single x equaling 2. 1x is written as x. Because it's more "efficient." (Sounds better than saying "lazy", doesn't it?) Once the language of algebra becomes comfortable, we can start playing around with it, which leads us to the wild world of algebra.
