They don't necessarily always test the prowess of math skills but more with understanding just what is being asked to do. Perhaps the most fundamental error students have when taking these tests is not carefully reading the problem or skipping the problem because it "appears" to be difficult.

I approach Trigonometry more logically, and limit the formula and identity memorization to an absolute minimum. If can be easily derived, why clutter your brain with another memorized formula.
