However, a student can miss several points by not being familiar with some useful "tricks." Since when applying to selective graduate programs any extra point counts, that is perhaps the bad news.

I approach Trigonometry more logically, and limit the formula and identity memorization to an absolute minimum. If can be easily derived, why clutter your brain with another memorized formula.
